Carmichael is Sacramento’s original and most established suburb. Located just nine miles northeast of downtown, between Interstate 80 and Highway 50 it is rich with outdoor and recreational opportunities.
Carmichael began coming to life in the 1950s and continued to grow through the ‘80s, and now has a population of about 58,000. It is a classic suburban community, comprised of well-kept ranch style and contemporary homes positioned along tree-lined streets with pockets of private gated communities and posh estates along the American River. Sacramento Magazine touts it as one of the region’s great neighborhoods – emphasizing its country lifestyle with city conveniences.
There are more than a dozen parks nestled throughout Carmichael. The community’s crowning jewel is Ancil Hoffman Park. Located on the American River Parkway, the 395-acre park features the Effie Yeaw Nature Center and an 18-hole golf course. The 38-acre Carmichael Park is also popular among locals and Sacramentans everywhere. It has five baseball fields, six tennis courts, three playgrounds, an off-leash dog park, Frisbee golf course, and clubhouse. The park is also hosts a free summer concert series and Sunday farmers market. Additional events include an Easter Egg Hunt, monthly food truck events, Fourth of July Parade, and Founders Day celebration.
For quieter outdoor outings, there’s the Jensen Botanical Garden. The three-and-a-
half acre garden is lush with oaks, coastal redwoods, magnolias, azaleas, dogwoods, and Japanese maples.
The Chautauqua Playhouse is a cultural hub in the community, producing plays and musicals for kids and grownups alike throughout the year. The Playhouse is located in the La Sierra Community Center, which is also home to the Sacramento Fine Arts Center.
